Two candidates remain for St. Johnsbury police chief

St. Johnsbury is one step closer to hiring a new police chief.

Former police Chief Clem Houde was put on administrative leave back in June. About a month later, Houde announced his retirement. Officials have been tight-lipped on what caused the sudden decision. A WCAX public records request revealed after-hours conversations with a female subordinate officer. Town Manager Chad Whitehead says the search to replace Houde is now down to two candidates.

Groton resident Tim Page is a retired detective sergeant from the Vermont State Police. Scott Keene is a police officer in Stowe. Whitehead says they are looking for someone who is a good fit.

"Somebody that can be involved with in the town. I think there's a lot of opportunity here in the town and a lot of things are happening right now. It's busy in St. Johnsbury and we want somebody that's going to be apart of the community, and help share that with us," Whitehead said.

Whitehead says the two officers will meet with a panel this upcoming week. The new chief is expected to be on the job by the first of the year.
