NEWPORT, Vt. (WCAX) - Prosecutors have reached a plea deal with a Northeast Kingdom woman accused of fatally stabbing her former boyfriend.

Jennifer Simard, 49, who faced murder charges connected to the 2016 stabbing death of Kevin Smith, has agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter. In a statement read into the court record on Wednesday in Newport, Simard admitted she “brandished a knife, a lethal weapon,” and caused the death of Smith.

Police say Simard called the police following the incident at her home in Brownington. Investigators initially didn’t know if he died by suicide, by accident, or if it was a homicide. It would take two years for a grand jury to indict her with murder and manslaughter.

Now, five years after Smith’s death, the murder charge has been dropped.

A judge will determine if she will go to jail. Her minimum sentence would be 15 years.
