Police identify suspect in South Burlington mall shooting
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Police have identified a suspect in the shooting at the University Mall in South Burlington Monday night.
Authorities are looking for Tyshane Smith, 18, who they say was positively identified as the lone shooter in the incident that sent one bystander to the hospital and closed down the mall for several hours.
Police say a group of teens got into a dispute near the Kohl’s and food court area of the mall. That’s when they say Smith fired a 9 mm handgun five times. The victim was hit by shrapnel and suffered minor injuries. It’s still unclear why Smith allegedly fired the gun but police say there was a long-standing disagreement between him and his intended target.
Police say they are also investigating how the 18-year-old got the gun. They are not releasing security camera footage.
Police are still looking for Smith and anyone with information is asked to call the police.
Employees said Tuesday they are glad things are back to normal and the shooting wasn’t random. “It sucks either way. Obviously, I don’t want anyone hurt, but I’m glad it was just one secluded area versus someone out actively shooting everywhere. We didn’t know at my end of the mall what was really happening except for that we heard gunshots and just locked the gate,” said Nikki Tye.
