BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) - A Barre man is safe after being rescued by local firefighters from a burning apartment building.

It happened Thursday night around 7:30 p.m. on Fairview Street in Barre. Crews say flames and smoke were coming out of a first-floor apartment and that a man was stuck in the second-floor apartment. He was rescued after firefighters climbed a ladder.

We’re told everyone in all three apartments made it out safely and were sent to local hotels. But the first-floor apartment is significantly damaged by fire and there’s smoke, water damage to the second floor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials are urging everyone to check your smoke detector batteries, make sure holiday decorations are properly installed, and water your Christmas trees.
