BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Should Vermont’s mask mandate be lifted? There’s a petition getting thousands of signatures that says yes.

The mandate was put in place by Gov. Phil Scott in response to the coronavirus. And it’s still in effect.

Back in late July two Vermont residents started a petition to oppose the mask mandate, now six weeks later, they’re over 3000 signatures on that petition.

The governor told WCAX he had not heard of the petition, but reiterated the importance of the mandate.

“If we want to continue to open up the economy, if we want to have more interaction, if you want to travel more, wear your mask. It’s pretty simple. It’s a prevention tool that I think has proven to be essential,” said Gov. Scott.

The governor says the state will continue with the mandate until there is a vaccine.
